DW: Angela Merkel's CDU takes major hit in regional elections — initial projections 

The Christian Democrats has lost ground in two crucial state elections in Germany, exit polls show. 

The Greens have won the state of Baden-Württemberg again. Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) took a hit Sunday evening, with early results showing that recent scandals and the mishandling of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout potentially damaged the party in two vital state elections. 

Elections in the German states of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate were the first major political test ahead of the general election in September.

WNU Editor: This is a major defeat for Chancellor Angekla Markel and her party. As for the reasons why her party was defeated. It all comes down to how her government has responded to the pandemic.  Germany is now in its "third wave", and Germany's vaccine roll-out has been slow when compared to other countries like the U.S. and the U.K..
