* As of Monday, 675,446 people in the U.S. have died from COVID-19, surpassing the number who died from Spanish flu during the 1918 pandemic 

* However, the death rate was much larger in 1918 because the total U.S. population stood at about 105 million compared to 330 million in 2021 

* This means there were 642 Spanish flu deaths per 100,000 people compared to 204 Covid deaths per 100,000 Americans 

* Additionally, half the black population were unaccounted for while calculating 1918 mortality statistics, suggesting black deaths were undercounted 

* Scientists say it is 'distressing' to see so many Americans die in an era where modern medicine, such as vaccines, are available compared to 1918 

The United States' COVID-19 death toll has surpassed the number of Americans killed during the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic. 

As of Monday afternoon, a total of 675,446 people in the U.S. have died from Covid-related causes, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. 

That's more than the estimated 675,000 fatalities attributed to the Spanish flu more than a century ago.
