A figure we knew nothing about a few years ago is rapidly becoming the most powerful woman in the world – and potentially very dangerous.
Not too long ago, even the most devoted watchers of North Korean politics knew little to nothing about Kim Yo-jong.
The sister of dictator Kim Jong-un and youngest child of the hermit nation’s late Supreme Leader, Kim Jong-il, had spent her life in the shadows until she appeared at her father’s funeral in 2011.
Less than a decade later, her triumph on the world stage at the Winter Olympics in South Korea demonstrated her meteoric rise through the often-brutal ranks of Pyongyang’s leadership.
Recent major developments indicate she’s grown that power and is the likely heir to the North Korean leadership – whether her brother likes it or not.

WNU Editor: Regular readers of this blog know that I have been following Kim Yo-Jong for years.
I have also seen her as the defacto second leader of the country. This is what I wrote early this year ....
.... I remember when South Korean President Moon Jae-in met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the DMZ in 2018, the North Korean security presence around Kim Jong Un was enormous. I also noticed that his security detail was ignoring all the other North Korean leaders and Generals with the exception of one person, the leader's sister Kim Jo-jong .... A Closer Look At North Korean Leader Kim Jong-Un's Security Detail (May 19, 2018). Another thing that I saw at that summit was how all the North Korean officials present were deferential to her. They never initiated any conversation with her. It was the other way around. When she was talking with the officials that were present there, she was the one who initiated the conversation. She is also the only North Korean official that I know who has been present at every major North Korean foreign event for the past 6-7 years, and in some cases she was the only one there (Seoul Winter Olympics). Regular readers of this blog know that I have always viewed Kim Yo-jong as the defacto "Vice-President" of North Korea. I still see her as that.
As to the question .... is she the world's most dangerous person?
My answer is no.
In fact I see her as someone who is trying to bridge the divide between North and South Korea. She is after-all the first senior North Korean leader to go to South Korea since the end of the Korean war (she went to the Seoul Olympics). She has also been present at every international summit where the focus was on reconciliation and lowering tensions. Check-out this post that I wrote three years ago ....
